I want, first of all, a sensual response to the paintings I make. Color plays a big part.
Recently I desire a kind of “breathing” from warm to cool and back. Painting is very intuitive to me, on one level, and very analytical on the other. I strive for a union of the simple & the complex, a connection between abstraction & association.
The more child-like a painting appears, the better; however, each painting is also designed to work from many angles, both formally and associationally, somewhat like a Rorschach test. The 4-Way-ness of these paintings contributes to content of transformation & change, simultaneity, & other time/space continuum issues. My best work creates a tension between the spontaneous/child-like and the analytical, creating more depth in the Reconciliation of Opposites that results.
“Modular, 4-Way Garden”, below, is a good example. It can be shown from any direction as a diptych or split in half and shown horizontally as an abstract landscape.
